COVID-19 has underscored just how vital the healthcare industry, and those who lead it, are to our country. Modern Healthcare recognizes two influential HCA Healthcare clinical leaders in its 2020 list of “50 Most Influential Clinical Executives.”
We’re proud to share that Dr. Jonathan Perlin, president of clinical operations and chief medical officer, and Dr. Jane Englebright, senior vice president and chief nurse executive, were recognized by Modern Healthcare as two of this year’s “50 Most Influential Clinical Executives.”

Modern Healthcare’s program recognizes clinicians working in the healthcare industry who are deemed by their peers and an expert panel to be the most influential in terms of demonstrating clinical leadership and impact.
Dr. Perlin remains on the list for the 11th consecutive year since 2010, and Dr. Englebright was named to the list for a second consecutive year. Both leaders head HCA Healthcare’s Clinical Operations Group.

Under Dr. Perlin’s leadership and using innovative approaches to deliver high-quality and safe healthcare, HCA Healthcare aims to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients by systematically supporting learning and healthcare transformation. As part of a learning health system, Dr. Perlin encourages his teams to draw upon the latest scientific evidence as well as our own large-scale research to drive discovery and create new best practices. By leveraging data and our breadth and depth of expertise, our clinical teams have set new standards of care in important areas such as infection prevention, treatment of sepsis, maternal health and safe deliveries. Some of our recent innovations include:
- Award-winning work using artificial intelligence to reduce sepsis mortality. Our SPOT (Sepsis Prediction and Optimization of Therapy) technology continuously monitors vital signs, lab results, nursing reports and other data to detect subtle changes in a patient’s condition that signal impending sepsis. It alerts clinicians to signs of sepsis as much as six hours earlier than prior sepsis detection methods so they can take appropriate, often life-saving action.
- Crushing the opioid crisis by ensuring patients have access to safer, more effective pain management, raising awareness about the dangers of opioid addiction and providing proper disposal of these medications.
- Responding to stroke 30% faster than the national standard through proven clinical protocols, telemedicine and coordinated care.
These clinical efforts to deliver superior patient care are both driven and supported by HCA Healthcare’s more than 98,000-plus nurses, led by Dr. Englebright, who was named HCA Healthcare’s first chief nursing officer in 2007. In her role, she has focused nursing leadership on a defined global strategy and fostered an open environment where nurses’ voices are not only heard, but acted upon – leading to exciting advancements in patient care.

Under Dr. Englebright’s leadership, HCA Healthcare’s nursing agenda has driven forward a number of ongoing initiatives that empower nurses with technology, voice and recognition programs that enable them to provide excellent care to patients:
- Professional Practice Councils empower nurses to further improve patient care outcomes. Within these councils, nurses use their voices to share best practices and collaborate on topics related to patient outcomes, nursing quality and clinical practice standards and policies and procedures.
- Advisory Councils govern how best practices are shared across our nationwide system of hospitals. These councils include nursing representatives from each division and various clinical roles, including direct care nursing staff and nurse leaders.
- Nurses at every level of our organization shape business and operational decisions across the enterprise. Nurses are best known for being on the frontlines of care, but they are stepping beyond nurse director and CNO titles and into C-suite roles like CEO and COO.
- HCA Inspire App gives nurses a way to connect with and recognize each other, see schedules from their mobile device 24/7 and access to professional development tools, mentoring and sample career pathways.
- HCA Healthcare’s Unit of Distinction program recognizes nursing units that demonstrate exemplary performance in the fields of critical care, emergency services, medical-surgical, surgical services, behavioral health and women’s and children’s services.
