Kim Adams, RN, has been named Medical City Plano’s first-ever recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses after tending to slain Richardson (Texas) Police Officer David Sherrard. The HCA Healthcare-affiliated trauma nurse, whose husband is also a police officer, stayed beyond her shift to care for Officer Sherrard and comfort and support the family and first responders.
Adams would later pen a letter to her “sister in blue” – the wife of the fallen officer Nicole Sherrard – and create a special memorial painting for his family.
“We’re a blue family, so to have other blue sisters, it’s amazing,” Sherrard told the Plano Star Courier. “After hearing her (Kim’s) story, my heart breaks for her. I hurt for me and my family, but I hurt for everybody. I hurt for the nurses and the doctor on scene. I’m just grateful for everybody that did the best that they could do. I’m happy Kim got this award. She deserves it.”
In a surprise ceremony, Adams was presented the award for her service to Officer Sherrard, the city’s first officer to die in the line of duty, by none other than his widow and her now friend, Nicole.
“It will forever affect me. I think about him every day. I have a picture of him in my locker. A picture of him hangs on the wall in the ER,” Adams said to the local reporter.
A picture of Officer Sherrard that includes signatures from the Richardson Police Department now hangs the emergency room of Medical City Plano.
“We celebrate Kim for this recognition and for her professionalism, compassionate care and for having a profound impact on this family’s life,” said Jane Englebright, RN, PhD, who leads 87,000 nurses as chief nurse executive at HCA Healthcare.
Established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of an autoimmune disease, the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) award honors nurses who go beyond the call of duty in the lives of patients and their families.
Adams was nominated by Medical City Plano’s Emergency Services Director.
“It’s important that our nurses know their work is highly valued, and The DAISY Foundation provides a unique way for us to do that,” said Medical City Plano’s Chief Nursing Officer Sandy Haire.
Kim Adams has served as a registered nurse at Medical City Plano for just more than four years. Medical City Plano is a member of Medical City Healthcare and an affiliate of HCA Healthcare.
HCA 50th Anniversary
In 1968, HCA Healthcare was conceived by two physicians and an accomplished business leader — Dr. Thomas Frist Sr., Dr. Thomas Frist Jr., and Jack Massey. This year, HCA celebrates its golden anniversary and the culture of caring established by our three founders 50 years ago. To help us celebrate our 50th year, we’ll share stories here that reflect HCA’s mission – above all else, the care and improvement of human life – and our pledge to improve life and make history for the next 50 years and beyond.
