Hello from The Jason Foundation, Inc.! My name is Clark Flatt and I started this foundation in 1997 after losing my youngest son, Jason – age 16 to the terrible “Silent Epidemic” of youth suicide. The goal of The Jason Foundation is to stop youth suicide by providing programs and resources that educates and equips individuals with awareness and tools to help identify and assist at-risk youth.

Did you know that suicide is now the 2nd leading cause of death for our youth ages 10-24 in our nation? More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease COMBINED. We call it a “Silent Epidemic” because it takes approximately 100 young people each week in our nation and yet most are not aware of its impact to our communities, nation and most of all our families.

We are excited about announcing our new National Community Affiliate – Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) and wanted to share that excitement with you! Effective August 1, 2013, HCA and JFI will be working together through its network of selected hospitals that offer adolescent behavioral health services.

Suicide is a leading cause of death for our youth, however, it is also a leading cause of “PREVENTABLE” death for our youth. Four out of five young people who will attempt suicide will demonstrate and express clear “warning signs” before the attempt. That means, if we can educate those whose lives touch our youth by providing them the information, tools and resource to help recognize these “warning signs” and respond responsibility – we have an opportunity to prevent 80% of those attempts and potential suicide deaths.

Working with the HCA family, we together will be providing that “education” to students, educators / youth workers and communities. Bottom line, lives will be made better and lives will be saved because of our work together.

We are off to a great start and will have 10 JFI / HCA Community Resource Centers up and serving their communities in the near future. This is an exciting affiliation and we hope you will celebrate with us.
