Five Years as a “Best Place to Work in IT”

HCA IT&S has been listed by Computerworld as one of the “Best Places to Work in IT” for a fifth year, and I hope I never take being named to this prestigious roster for granted. I am pleased that our healthcare technology professionals have been honored for these past five years, and our leadership teams across the country and I are as committed as ever to furthering the high standards of a “best places” environment. You can read more details about the award in the press release.

Five years ago, when we were first named to the “Best Places to Work in IT” roster, we were a very different organization. We were still maturing our fourteen division IT offices that are dispersed across the country, were still learning how to operate as a cohesive IT organization, and were just beginning to rally around the idea of us being “One IT”. Today, our division IT offices are instrumental in the implementation and support of numerous new technologies to improve patient care and the physician experience.

Another significant change over the past five years has been the expansion of our professional development programs. Our employees are our most important asset, and to that end we have expanded these programs to provide over a thousand opportunities to employees, encourage our emerging leaders and aspiring managers, and facilitate a healthcare emersion experience that allows employees to see our technologies in action in a variety of healthcare settings.

Each week I share a podcast with everyone in IT&S, using it as an opportunity to recognize the many good things happening in IT&S, and a common theme for the year has been about precision and excellence. I have been challenging myself and the organization to have a higher degree of focus and precision, so that the end result is not just good but excellent. At mid-year, I’m seeing excellence in our results, and fine tuning our focus is making a difference in how we support our customers, how we monitor our systems, how we protect patient information, how we develop our employees, and other ways that are too numerous to name here.

It’s because we are good at what we do and because we are striving for excellence that we are listed among the top 100 “Best Places to Work in IT”, and I continue to feel privileged to work with some of the most talented IT healthcare professionals in the country. If you are an IT professional and our organization sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, we invite you to learn more about us at
