Today, there are 12 million veterans in the civilian workforce (we have over 4,400 at HCA alone). Over one million veterans are currently unemployed. One of the reasons behind this is employers don’t always know how to match military talent with their open positions.

To help address this problem, the US Chamber of Commerce launched a new veteran hiring program called “Hiring Our Heroes” in March of 2011. The effort started with a partnership between the US Chamber of Commerce, and The Department of Labor Veterans Employment and Training Services (DOL VETS).  That partnership has now grown to include the Civilian Business Community, Government Agencies, and Veteran Service Organizations. Their goal is to find work for one million unemployed veterans in the U.S. One of the main ways they’re hoping to achieve this is by offering veteran only job fairs at more than 100 locations across the U.S.

At HCA we’re excited to let you know that we’ve joined the “Hiring Our Heroes” initiative and are currently serving on their Veterans Employment Advisory Council (VEAC) made of America’s biggest employers across all industries. We’ve always taken pride in hiring Veterans. By participating in this new program we’ll be able to work more closely with veterans and encourage them to consider HCA as they move into the civilian workplace. In preparation, our hiring managers and recruiters are going through some basic training of their own to help them translate military job descriptions to the job classifications we use at HCA.

After hiring… our job continues!

Our commitment to our veterans doesn’t end after they are hired. We want to do everything we can to help our veterans succeed at HCA for the long term. One of the ways we’re doing that is by expanding our current Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to meet a veteran’s specific needs. The EAP offers any employee the opportunity to speak with someone outside the company about any personal issue that might be affecting personal health or work performance.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has set a big goal for itself and we’re glad to do our part to help. WE WANT YOU to help too. Visit the “Hiring Our Heroes” Facebook page and share their job fair schedule with your friends.

We’re looking forward to meeting many of our veterans at the upcoming job fairs. If you’re going to be at one, let us know in the comment section below. We’ll be sure to look out for you.
